Responsibility

At Reflector, we value responsibility from both a human and environmental perspective. We want to promote more humane IT, where both the end result and the work to produce it are sustainable. For us, responsibility is a prerequisite for good business and trust.

Environmental responsibility

Reflector’s environmental impact primarily stems from how much waste we produce, how we support the circular economy, what modes of transport are used for commuting, and how much energy we consume. We believe that even small actions matter—for example, we have no printer at all in our office.

Our office at Pool premises (Itämerenkatu 3, 00180 Helsinki) is carbon neutral and holds an environmental certificate.

What does environmental responsibility mean for us?

We do not replace mobile phones and computers unnecessarily; instead, we maintain and protect them to extend their lifespan. Broken devices less than two years old are primarily repaired. Other devices are sent to electronics recycling or buyback services.

We acquire devices primarily from operators that invest in the circular economy and responsibility. We also utilize used devices whenever possible.

Our office recycling stations are actively used. We also recycle waste generated at client premises whenever possible.

Our office does not have a printer. Larger printing needs are handled through external, responsible copy services.

We favor public transport and cycling. We do not offer car benefits or parking benefits.

We do not travel by air for business trips, as our clients are located in Finland.

We always turn off lights and devices after use—this is also important for information security reasons.

We highlight the impact of architecture, coding, and content solutions on energy consumption and help clients make more environmentally friendly choices in service implementation.

Social responsibility

As a consulting company, we particularly emphasize social responsibility: well-being, equality, and respectful collaboration with employees, clients, and partners.

At Reflector, our values have been articulated together by the entire staff. For us, values are real life, not empty talk.

What does social responsibility mean for us?

For us, values, fairness, respect, and diversity are part of everyday work. Our values are discussed openly and developed together.

We offer flexible working hours and remote work opportunities, taking into account client needs. Short-term work from abroad is also possible.

We support employees’ professional development through training opportunities and career path programs. Development activities are described in more detail in the workplace development plan.

We donate annually to a charity chosen by the staff instead of Christmas gifts. The donation amount increases as the number of employees grows.

In addition to clients, we collaborate with organizations such as Aalto University to share expertise and promote responsible IT.

Good governance

Operations in accordance with good governance and information security are the foundation of everything we do.

At Reflector, we believe that responsible IT consulting creates not only better projects but also more sustainable business for all parties.

Governance guidelines relate to Reflector’s ethical principles, transparent management, and good practices in accordance with legislation.

What does good governance mean for us?

The company’s management practices are described in the Corporate Governance manual.

We operate honestly, openly, and respecting regulation. We want every party to receive a good outcome from our operations: clients, Reflector employees, and our own company.

We communicate company matters to staff openly, and the financial situation is regularly reviewed together.

Client information is handled carefully and according to guidelines, either on the client’s or Reflector’s devices, depending on the nature of the work.

Landfill as a background image

One of our company’s owners, Seme Hokynar, uses an image of a landfill as his Teams background. The choice is not accidental.

When Teams backgrounds became popular, many featured glass-walled, minimalist offices or designer homes. These are still widely seen in Teams. Seme wanted something different that breaks the sterility and stands out from the rest.

The second reason for choosing the landfill image is the small pang it may cause. Waste accumulates into mountains, and the planet cannot sustain this indefinitely. Seme does not want to preach about the subject but hints with the image, tongue in cheek: if we do nothing, we are also part of the problem.

Responsibility is not always about large campaigns, massive projects, or ceremonial speeches. It begins with small actions: not throwing cigarette butts on the street or trusting that “someone else will clean up.” Attitude change happens slowly, but even a single person’s realization about these matters improves the situation.

Seme compares this to first aid training: if first aid were taught in schools once a year throughout the entire educational journey—12 years—something would stick with many. Perhaps the skill and courage to save someone’s life? Small actions and continuous reminders about responsibility and environmental consideration can change attitudes.
